Fabric GSM Calculator
Input the weight of your sample specimen in grams and its length and width in centimeters.
The Formula Explained
To compute GSM from a rectangular or square sample of arbitrary dimension:
Area (m²) = (Length cm × Width cm) / 10,000
GSM (g/m²) = Sample Weight (g) / Area (m²)
GSM (g/m²) = Sample Weight (g) / Area (m²)
For standard circular GSM round cutters (100 cm²):
Since standard round cutters have an area of 0.01 m², simply multiply sample weight by 100:
GSM = Sample Weight (g) × 100
Worked Industrial Example
A fabric swatch of dimensions 20 cm × 25 cm weighs 9.0 grams:
- Area = (20 × 25) / 10,000 = 0.05 m²
- GSM = 9.0 / 0.05 = 180 g/m² (Standard Single Jersey)
